iSimangaliso Wetland Park

In 1999 the iSimangaliso Wetland Park was declared South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, spanning over 358,534 hectares, rich in diverse ecosystems and stunning natural landscapes the park boasts South Africa’s largest estuarine system, pristine beaches, coastal forests, and diverse wetlands rich with wildlife. 

Since 1 August 2019, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park’s marine protected area (MPA) expanded significantly, with the result that the World Heritage Site is now 1,328,901ha in extent (marine and terrestrial combined). The Park is now South Africa’s second largest protected area after the Kruger National Park, incorporating the country’s largest MPA – also the only Transfrontier MPA as it joins Mozambique’s protected waters.

Guests can spot hippos and crocodiles in Lake St Lucia, and snorkel among vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life in the Indian Ocean. From birdwatching in the wetlands to exploring some of the world’s highest coastal dunes, every corner of iSimangaliso offers a breathtaking experience.

Vukunyane Development Project & Birding Tours

Vukunyane is a community development initiative founded by Themba Mtembu of St Lucia Birding in October 2012. Themba, a specialist birding guide based in St Lucia, aims to raise environmental awareness among local schools and communities through effective, professional training, promoting sustainable conservation and tourism. Makakatana Bay Lodge supports this project by providing essential supplies for educational camps, including birding books, binoculars, cameras, clothing, and food parcels. General Conservation and Sustainability

Makakatana Bay Lodge has always been committed to conservation and sustainability. We pride ourselves on our various initiatives, including recycling, minimizing plastic use, eliminating plastic straws, maintaining bee hives and a herb garden, composting, managing water and electricity efficiently, and installing solar power.

Ezemvelo Anti-Poaching Unit

Combating poaching requires immense bravery and dedication. The courageous individuals in our anti-poaching teams face danger daily to protect wildlife. A portion of the funds raised through our levy is allocated to purchasing essential equipment such as binoculars, trap cameras, and uniforms for these dedicated units.
